There are three reasons why I believe New Zealand can expect more lockdown. No Face Saving Exit from the Threat-Fantasy of COVID-19 The New Zealand government has no face-saving way to extricate itself from the fantasy of the COVID-19 threat it has sold to the country. The virus is and has always been just a bad flu virus. Even official bodies such as the CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) are now downplaying the threat. Every year on average 606 Kiwis die of influenza and pneumonia. Every death is a personal tragedy but no one has ever thought it necessary to shut down the country. The 1996 flu epidemic killed 90 people. The “Swine Flu” in 2009 killed 20. The problem the government has is that, apart from public apology, I can see no face saving way it can end the threat-fantasy of COV-ID 19. They are like the Emperor in the fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. The Emperor and his courtiers continue the fantasy of his elegant clothes because to do otherwise would be embarrassing and politically dangerous in the extreme. It takes a boy who knows no better standing in the crowd watching the Emperor parade past to blurt out “but he has no clothes on”. The fantasy collapses. Until then government is forced to continue the charade and lockdown when more COVID-19 cases are confirmed. No Herd Immunity There will be more COVID-19 cases because of the inherent flaw of the lockdown strategy – it prevents the development of herd immunity as happened with previous new flu strains. Because there is no way for the government to exit the threat-fantasy every new case has to be treated as a dire emergency. Hence more lockdown. Sweden will shortly achieve herd immunity while its mortality rate is between 8 and 17 times LESS than the dire predictions that were used as justification to shut down the UK, US, NZ and most of the rest of the world. COVID-19 like other flu virus are a fact of life. We don’t bother about them in general because of the immunity we as a population have built up. No vaccines are required to do this. It is a natural part of our body’s defence system. But we do need to build immunity. The only way to do this is for people to get infected. If it was not for the hysteria of the government and mainstream media (MSM) very few people would take any notice of this natural process. Flu Season is Upon Us The third reason to expect more lockdown is that flu is seasonal. In temperate zones it coincides with winter. The northern hemisphere is moving into summer. Australia and New Zealand are moving into winter. It is likely our low fatalities have as much to do with the seasons as they have to do with “Team New Zealand” adhering to lockdown rules. If it was not for the political need to maintain the COVID-19 threat-fantasy the approach of winter would be welcomed as it would now be our opportunity to build the herd immunity that Sweden is fast achieving.
